Tanzania’s digital economy is paying off—literally. The country collected TSh 183 billion (US$71.5 million) in digital tax revenue between July 2024 and March 2025.

The bulk of this revenue came from online gambling, social media advertising, and international streaming services. With 1,820 businesses registered, Tanzania’s tax model includes a 2% digital services tax, 3% withholding tax, and 18% VAT.

The government is finalizing a national e-commerce strategy to expand this momentum, aiming to modernize regulations while fostering digital innovation.
