MTN South Africa has launched a bold initiative to transition millions of users from 2G and 3G networks to 4G with ultra-low-cost smartphones.
Targeting 1.2 million prepaid users, MTN will offer smartphones starting at 99 rand (US$5.42) over a phased rollout through 2026. This aligns with the government’s plan to shut down legacy networks by 2027, ensuring that low-income communities are not left behind in the digital transitions.
This move is expected to significantly boost internet access and digital inclusion, especially in rural and peri-urban communities.
