JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — MTN is launching ultra-low-cost smartphones priced from just R99 (approximately US$5) to help over 1.2 million prepaid customers transition to 4G ahead of the 2027 phase-out of 2G and 3G networks.

The initiative—part of MTN’s broader effort to enhance digital inclusion—targets underserved communities who rely on legacy devices, many of which are incompatible with modern data services.

“This is about ensuring no one is left behind as we move into a fully digital economy,” said MTN SA CEO Charles Molapisi.

The rollout will take place in phases through 2026 and includes basic smartphones capable of running mobile internet, messaging, and key apps.

South Africa plans to retire older networks by December 2027 to free up spectrum and reduce maintenance costs. MTN’s smartphone drive could serve as a model for other African markets facing similar challenges.
