JOHANNESBURG, South Africa: While mobile cyberattacks across the Middle East, Turkiye, and Africa (META) region remain a serious concern, Africa recorded a 17% drop in mobile threats in Q1 2025, according to cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.

At the 10th annual Cyber Security Weekend – META 2025, Kaspersky revealed:

  • Africa: 94,270 mobile attacks, down 17%.
  • Turkiye: 28,592 attacks, down 16%.
  • Middle East: Over 57,000 attacks, up by 43%.

Kaspersky experts say the decline in Africa is promising, possibly reflecting increased awareness and improved security practices. However, they warn that cybercriminals are evolving, using AI-powered malware, social engineering, and even pre-installed threats on counterfeit phones.

Key Threats Identified:

  • Tria Trojan: Spread via WhatsApp and Telegram disguised as fake wedding invites.
  • SparkCat: A data-stealing Trojan on Google Play and App Store, with 242,000+ downloads.
  • Triada Malware: Found preloaded on counterfeit Android phones sold at low prices.

How to Stay Safe:

  • Download apps only from trusted stores. Review app permissions, especially for sensitive functions.
  • Use mobile security software like Kaspersky Premium.
  • Keep your operating system and apps updated.

Kaspersky is urging mobile providers and app developers to integrate cybersecurity at every level and offer tailored protection for users.

“Cybersecurity is a shared responsibility,” said Tatyana Shishkova, Kaspersky’s Lead Security Researcher. “Proactive protection is key to staying ahead of evolving threats.”
