Accra, Ghana – The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across Ghana for breaching broadcasting regulations, following the expiry of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama.
The affected stations were found to be in violation of the laws and regulations governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana, with some failing to take corrective action despite the regulatory amnesty.
Six Stations Refused to Comply
According to the NCA, six stations “failed, refused and neglected” to remedy the breaches and have had their operations halted. These include:
- Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9 FM – Ho)
- Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9 FM – New Abirem)
- Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3 FM – Kintampo)
- Jewel Group Limited (102.7 FM – Duayaw Nkwanta)
- Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3 FM – Kpandai)
- Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7 FM – Nkawkaw)
Wontumi Multimedia Faces Multi-City Shutdown
In one of the most high-profile suspensions, Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited has had three of its stations taken off air in Accra (95.9 FM), Kumasi (101.3 FM), and Takoradi (101.3 FM). The NCA cited breaches including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies, broadcasting from unapproved transmitter locations, and operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
The multi-city shutdown of Wontumi Multimedia underscores the regulator’s resolve to enforce compliance even among major market players.
The NCA stated it will continue monitoring the broadcasting sector to ensure all operators adhere to authorisation conditions and the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991).
This latest enforcement action reinforces Ghana’s commitment to maintaining regulatory standards in the media space and protecting the integrity of its broadcasting environment.
