The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced plans to introduce biometric international driving documents by 2026 to enhance global recognition, data security, and compliance with international standards.

The initiative will see Ghana replace its current International Driving Licence (IDL) and International Vehicle Permit (IVP) with upgraded versions that include biometric data in line with ISO standards. The new documents are designed to make it easier for Ghanaians to use their driving credentials abroad while reducing the risk of forgery and identity theft.

According to the DVLA, the biometric upgrade will also strengthen Ghana’s compliance with the United Nations Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, which governs cross-border recognition of driving permits.

When implemented, motorists will be able to access the new documents from DVLA offices nationwide. Each document will include a biometric data page for quick verification, supporting easier travel, car rentals, and vehicle registration in other countries.

Officials say the change will help position Ghana as a leader in secure mobility documentation across Africa. The move also aligns with the government’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes the integration of biometric technology in passports and national IDs.

The DVLA has encouraged drivers to keep their records updated in preparation for the rollout. More details on application timelines and requirements are expected to be announced in early 2026.
