Accra, Ghana — The National Communications Authority (NCA) has suspended the operations of nine radio stations across Ghana for breaching broadcasting regulations, with Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited facing the largest multi-city shutdown.
Following the expiry of a 30-day grace period granted by President John Dramani Mahama, the regulator moved to enforce compliance with the laws governing FM radio broadcasting in Ghana.
Wontumi Multimedia in the Spotlight
Wontumi Multimedia, one of the country’s controversial media operators, has had three of its stations taken off air — 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi. According to the NCA, the suspensions stem from breaches including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies, broadcasting from unapproved transmitter sites, and operating without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
The NCA says the action demonstrates its resolve to enforce broadcasting regulations regardless of the market position of the operator.
Other Stations Affected
Six other stations were also suspended after failing, refusing, or neglecting to remedy regulatory breaches. These include:
Donplus Multimedia Limited (105.9 FM – Ho) Dreams Ghana Media Limited (104.9 FM – New Abirem) Jam Multimedia Limited (101.3 FM – Kintampo) Jewel Group Limited (102.7 FM – Duayaw Nkwanta) Kpandai Star Community Radio (107.3 FM – Kpandai) Unique Gateway Communication Limited (105.7 FM – Nkawkaw)
The NCA reiterated its commitment to monitoring the broadcasting sector and enforcing compliance with the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991) to protect the integrity of Ghana’s media space.
